The Elastomer Guideline published in 2011 by the Umweltbundesamt (UBA), Germany’s federal environmental agency, decides which input materials can be used for the manufacture of elastomers in accordance with the principles of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The transition period for the Elastomer Guideline ends on 31/12/2021. Numerous sulphur cross-linked compounds currently in use in drinking water applications can no longer be used after that time.

We offer an innovative and efficient solution to this for the drinking water market. As a result, at the end of 2018 KRAIBURG developed the compound series KRAIBURG Pure. This series can be used in elastomers for drinking water applications also after 2021.

KRAIBURG Pure compounds have received German, British and French drinking water certifications. In this context, the type test in accordance with the UBA Elastomer Guideline (for cold and hot water) was also initiated. In the future, this type test of our test plates is sufficient – in coordination with the test institute – as long as the finished components have similar dimensions or only a minimal surface that comes into contact with water.

Additionally, the formulation meets the requirements of the positive list for aqueous foodstuffs according to CFR 21 §  177.2600, “Rubber Articles Intended For Repeated Use” of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The series also features the same efficient rheometry of the current compounds for drinking water applications, in addition to high storage stability, which allows a minimum shelf life of at least 120 days (when stored in accordance with DIN 7716).
