H2-Applications: Certified Elastomer Compounds

Green Hydrogen: unlimited and climate friendly. The future!

There is hardly an energy source that is more in the spotlight than hydrogen H2. Society, politics and industry are pushing for hydrogen technologies that pave the way for the future. The reason is obvious: H2 is favorized as a climate-friendly replacement for traditional energy sources. It is used to power engines, provide heat through fuel cell heating systems, and store green energy.

H2 – Replacement for traditional energy sources

But caution is required: H2 is colorless, odorless, volatile, dissipates rapidly, and reacts with air to form an explosive gaseous mixture (detonating gas). Components that come into contact with hydrogen must therefore be as tight as a seal. Low hydrogen permeability (impermeability to gaseous substances) minimizes the risk of gas leakage and prevents loss through dissipation.

Science and industry are investing heavily in the development of hydrogen technologies and feasible applications. System and component suppliers are moving in the same direction with equal intensity.

Approved by DVGW (German gas and water standards authority) – Gummiwerk KRAIBURG elastomer compounds

In this context, the hydrogen industry is sure to welcome a specialty from Gummiwerk KRAIBURG: A new range of elastomer compounds that have been approved by the German gas and water standards authority DVGW. In short, these compounds can handle hydrogen. They are suitable for H2 applications, tested and approved according to the DVGW standard. The distinguishing feature of these high-performance compounds is their impermeability to gases in a wide range of applications.

KRAIBURG material solutions tested by German TÜV

We have submitted another group of compounds to the German Technical Standards Institute (TÜV). These compounds have been certified by TÜV in accordance with the North American SAE J2600 automotive standard. The certificate of approval is based on a series of SAE J2600 test cycles at the end of which the samples must show no evidence of explosive decompression damage, swell no more than 25%, shrink no more than 1%, and lose no more than 10% of their density.

The TÜV certification proved that the samples remained within safe limits for swelling and shrinkage and showed no signs of damage from explosive decomposition, according to the global SAE J2600 standard.

Worldwide standard: SAE J2600

The SAE J2600 approval test procedure has already established itself as the global safety standard for hydrogen vehicles and hydrogen gas stations. The independent certification authority TÜV has adopted the North American standards into its own testing portfolio in order to test and approve materials for their suitability and safety in components and systems for hydrogen applications.

Safe elastomer compounds for hydrogen applications

The successfully passed test procedures include a series of tests that determine the suitability of a material for use in hydrogen. Gummiwerk KRAIBURG is therefore in a privileged position to supply safe, high-quality compounds for hydrogen applications, as confirmed by the quality certification issued by the independent TÜV standards authority.

As a result, system and component manufactures can rely on a trusted “Made in Germany” seal for their H2 gas pumps, fueling nozzles or pipings.

Energy industry and supply

Energy supply without climate impact? Hydrogen is in pole position!

And in the gas supply network, elastomer compounds from Gummiwerk KRAIBURG are on the safe side. Because with H2 it is important to prevent leakage or diffusion of the highly flammable gas. DVGW tested and certified in accordance with ZP 5101.

The German authority for the gas and water industry confirms that the Gummiwerk KRAIBURG compounds have exactly this high level of gas impermeability. Their excellent properties are certified according to EN standards and are characterized by extremely low H2 permeability.

DIN EN 549

The standard defines the tests on standarized sample discs of the material, which are classified according to temperature and hardness classes.

DIN EN 682

The standard specifies material requirements for seals in service lines and components with operating temperatures from -5° C (in some cases up to -15° C) to +50° C.

Power-to-X

The perfect compound mix for any technology!

Power-to-X (PtX) refers to technologies that convert excess renewable energy into different energy carriers. For example, to gas (power-to-gas), to liquid fuels for combustion, or to raw materials for industry (power-to-chemicals).

Hydrogen plays a key role in this context. Thanks to the power-to-x process, it can be produced in a climate-friendly manner and subsequently serve as an energy storage and raw material for other energy-rich products such as synthetic fuels (E- fuels) and SAD (sustainable aviation fuel)) or chemical compounds.

Mobility

Future mobility will rely more and more on hydrogen. The mobility of the future will increasingly be based on hydrogen. Cars, buses, trucks, airplanes and ships powered by H2 will run emission-free with a fuel cell that converts hydrogen into electricity and drives an electric motor. Instead of filling up with fossil fuels, they fill up with hydrogen.

This in itself places high technical demands on the system components, which must guarantee impermeability to gas diffusion. H2 is highly flammable and explosive. Every seal must therefore prevent gas leakage.
