Gummiwerk KRAIBURG will be exhibiting at China Wind Power in Beijing from October 20 to 22, 2025, where it will showcase its solution for protecting the leading edges of wind turbine blades. At booth W1-D01-E at the German Pavilion, the spotlight will be on KRAIBURG LEP, which was recently successfully tested according to DNV-GL-RP-0573 for rotor blade leading edge protection.

KRAIBURG LEP: proven performance in accordance with DNV-GL-RP-0573

Gummiwerk KRAIBURG has executed a comprehensive qualification program under realistic operating conditions for its leading edge protection system, fully aligned with the recommended practice DNV-GL-RP-0573 for wind turbine blades. The program included rigorous rain erosion testing in accordance with DNV-GL-RP-0171, extended environmental aging over a 25-week period, adhesion performance assessments and tensile fatigue testing. The results confirm KRAIBURG LEP’s exceptional durability and performance.

Advanced environmental testing confirms erosion and UV resistance

Corrosion resistance was proven in continuous salt spray exposure in accordance with ISO 9227:2022, simulating the harsh conditions of marine and offshore environments. Accelerated UV weathering tests, performed in accordance with ISO 16474-3:2021 using fluorescent UV lamps, confirmed high resistance to photodegradation, surface embrittlement and long-term UV exposure. Low-temperature performance was also verified in compliance with DNV-GL-RP-0573, ensuring reliability even in severe cold climates. Furthermore, after a total of 4,200 hours of aging cycles, KRAIBURG LEP demonstrated excellent rain erosion resistance.

This rigorous testing program underlines the exceptional durability and robustness of Gummiwerk KRAIBURG’s LEP system, ensuring long-lasting protection of rotor blade leading edges and performance in real-world operating environments.

Reliable protection for Offshore, Nearshore and Onshore applications

“Leading-edge erosion of wind turbine blades is a common and significant challenge in the wind energy sector, often resulting in substantial and unexpected maintenance and repair costs,” explains Peter Kapinos, Business Development Manager at Gummiwerk KRAIBURG. “The rain erosion test report for KRAIBURG LEP confirms the performance of our LEP system – a qualified solution for Offshore, Nearshore and Onshore applications under demanding conditions, addressing the increasing demand for high-performance LEP systems in wind turbine applications.”

The rain erosion test report for Gummiwerk KRAIBURG’s LEP system gives wind turbine OEMs, wind farm operators and repairing companies clear proof of the system’s mechanical robustness and long-term durability. The implementation of KRAIBURG LEP supports the wind industry in effectively reducing maintenance costs and minimizing performance losses caused by leading edge erosion, ensuring more reliable and efficient turbine operation over the long term.
